Thalassemia (British spelling, "thalassaemia") is an inherited autosomal recessive blood disease. In thalassemia, the genetic defect results in reduced rate of synthesis of one of the globin chains that make up hemoglobin. Reduced synthesis of one of the globin chains causes the formation of abnormal hemoglobin molecules, and this in turn causes the anemia which is the characteristic presenting symptom of the thalassemias. Why did I suddenly brought up this genetic disorder? Last week I went for a blood test for some problem that I had and today when I collected the result it was suggestive that I have Thalassemia which causes anemia. I don't really know if any of my family members got it but since this a genetic disorder, there must be somebody in the family have it. But I didn't check if I'm a carrier or not. Anyway, it's not the end of the world. But of course whoever my husband to be need to go for a blood test.
The doctor said you're not a chronic Thalassemia, you're as normal as any other people but if you're a chronic Thalassemia, you may need to have frequent blood transfusion. She ask me not to worry too much and that if I feel tired I need to take folic acid (macam pompuan pregnant plak) instead of iron. Probably that explains why I always feel tired.
